    It’s so important for people to understand that inserts and orthotics are not the same thing. I get inserts to give extra padding when I run or ice skate, but I don’t have any major problems with my feet. My brother on the other hand has had orthotics since he was a young child. If he ever tried to work out with just inserts, his feet, ankles, and back would all bother him. If your inserts aren’t helping relieve pain and discomfort, it may be important to go to a specialist to see if you need more than just average inserts.

      You make a great point. There is a world of difference between an insert or generic insole and a medical orthotic. For some people they do just need a bit of something extra, but for many, something a little more is required. A specialist can help you find the right insoles or orthotics for you. That, in my opinion, is the whole point of taking the time to have an appointment and assess someone, so that you can find the right solution for them.

      I hear this so often from patients – often by the time people get to me they feel like they have “tried everything and seen everyone” without making any progress. MRT can often be a ray of light at the end of a long and often expensive tunnel. And the results speak for themselves. Maybe you should think about a little holiday in Marbella? 😉

    I have what I believe to be”carpal tunnel syndrome”. It started with a pain in my wrist which I couldn’t allocate to an injury. I had pain in my hand and forearm at night which would slowly ease during the day but reoccur at night. It has eased a little but I now have an inability to clench my fist in the morning and a tingling in thumb and two forefingers all day. I have heard a cortizone injection to the tunnel itself will “cure” it. I do a fairly repetitive job as a gardener and I think this may have brought on the inset of it.
    Can you help? Do I need a doctor? Will this improve in time? It has now been 2 months.

      Hi Mark,
      Thank you for getting in touch.
      From what you’ve said it does sound like you have compromised the nerve that runs from your neck to your fingers and hand. However there are a LOT of other junctions along the route before we get to your wrist that we would have to investigate.
      Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory and would, therefore, reduce inflammation (and pain) where it was injected. However the effects usually only last about 6 – 8 weeks and then the symptoms return, often worse as you have been “ignoring” the problem and continuing on as normal.
      The short answer is yes, I can help, we would need to do a proper, clinical assessment to determine where along the chain the problem was coming from and then look at the options to resolve it.
      It’s unlikely to go away “all by itself” as nerve irritation can linger without help.

    Driving can cause a lot of back pain if you are sitting incorrectly. I would highly suggest trying to follow these tips, because having to deal with the pain is not pleasant. You can always go to a physiotherapist to help take care of it, I have heard nothing but good things from those who have.

      Thank you for getting in touch!

      I would strongly suggest that you see a physiotherapist, especially in Australia they are highly trained and very competent (you have some of the best physios in the world!). They will be able to do a full assessment and then, if needed refer you to a podiatrist for orthotic support.

      You can also use Formthotics (a New Zealand product) if you can’t get an affordable pair of tailored orthotics – http://www.formthotics.com/ If you contact them directly, mentioning my name (I’ve used them for a long time!) then they will be able to point you in the right direction of someone locally who can help you.

    I have been attending a knee specialist in Dublin with regard to a torn cartilage sustained during a bout of jogging last August. Surgery is planned for the 13th May.     How refreshing. It is so rare, even in the vast online community, to see any kind of discussion around chiropractic care or physiotherapy as a remedy for migraines. We do use chiropractic care (including cracking) but we have also started to incorporate Magnetic Resonance Therapy, and we’re seeing great results.

    Hi, when I sit on the floor with my legs forwards in front of me,my legs are appear bent as everyone said. But for me I already straightned them! I noticed the back of my knee and my calf did not touch the floor. Can using these exercises help realign my legs? I never had injury or surgery of legs before. I am also flexible so tight hamstring shouldnt be a problem as I can do the splits. Thanks!

      Hi Barbara, I don’t know much about breast cupping as a technique, there are many different ways of activating the lymphatic system – some more effective than others!
      As with any medical treatment always check that they have proper scientific studies to back it up and are properly qualified and insured to treat you (just in case!).

    Hi. I am wintering here in Nerja Spain. I am from Ottawa Canada and have Parkinson’s. As part of my physical therapy program I attend three sessions a week. I use a variety of exercise tools including work with an exercise/balance ball.

    I would like to buy a balance ball for my exercise here I n Nerja. I am continuing to have 2/3 sessions per with my trainer. I have searched the internet and visited local shops in Nerja but have not found a place that sells these balls.

    Would you know of a shop in the area that sells these exercise balls? I am prepared to travel into Malaga if I can get one.

    Very interesting. I’m a 65 years old female, a retired osteopath from UK. I am constantly being told that I look much younger.     Do you do treatments for cervical spondylosis? It’s treating the referred pain I get down my arms and hands as well as my neck. I used to do a lot of resistance training (weights) but am unable to do that any more. I also used to cycle a lot but can’t hold my neck up now without a lot of pain. I’m 60 yrs old and have had this condition for about 7 years.

      We are mainly a physiotherapy clinic so don’t have any osteopaths (just cranio sacral).
      Therefore we use a wide range of evidence based techniques which don’t include spinal manipulation of the neck. Massage is one of them, there are a wide number of other mobilisation techniques which focus on muscle, myofascial and neuro mobility within manual therapy, there are also a broad range of electrotherapy techniques as well as home management. It depends on what is best suited to the patient, their history and current mobility levels.
      Sadly many people believe that massage and spinal manipulation are the only tools available – there is a HUGE range of other physical therapy techniques, both manual and electro, which can be applied depending on the requirements of the patient.

    Yes I m wondering the same thing. The back of the knee not touch. Could it be a function of the shape of the calf and hamstring muscles and not an indication of a bent knee? Would looking at the front, quad, knee cap and shin be a better measure of straightness for some people

    Hi Alexander and SamSam,
    For some, if you have a very developed calf muscle (think professional sports person!) then yes, there may be some interference with putting your knee straight onto the floor.
    For the rest of us, while there will be a small gap underneath the knee, the back of the knee should be straight. The muscles can create an optical illusion but this is why your physiotherapist has tools to check!

      The honest answer is the best exercise for back pain is the one that you do! Find one that is comfortable, enjoyable and that you can do on a regular basis. There is no right or wrong way to exercise your back! Go easy, work so that you are comfortable and give your body a chance to adapt.
      And make sure you are enjoying it!
      Movement is the best, anyway that you like!

      The effects of tinnitus vary depending on the intensity and how much the noise interferes with everyday life.

I went hospital and was given injections…nothing showed up on there normal scan…. after weeks of pain I went here had heat scan and nerve pain located straight away it took couple sessions and was completely healed after her also telling me where it had originally started from . I lived i Spain and in uk now… but every time I left her session felt I could skip out….soooo much relief…best treatment and service ever

    Hey i am a 35 yr old fisherman and have always had mild forms of tinnitus here and there since teenager but usually when coming back from work(on a fishing boat,so always some sort of a noise) to quiet home it would disappear pretty quick and maybe pop through a day here and there for few minutes,however during qaurantine it came on 1 day in 1 ear and has never left. I did have a bit of a bad neck and went to a masseuse and the pain went wuickly but had no effect on my tinnitus,nor did I expect to. But reading about what you said I thought I should mention it

    Im ssuffering abdominal pain coz of the shingles , rashes are gone but still painfull the right side of my body even im taking the pain killer like paracetamol priscribed my doc. Hu

    I am a US based physical therapist with more than 20 plus years experience and I used to own my own practice as well. I am looking to moving to the south of Spain and I am wondering if my US license would be easily transferrable and if you know this would support a self employed / entrepreneurship visa route to getting Spanish residency. Just exploring my options. Not having to start from scratch and having the option to build your own clientele within an already established business is a great idea. Aside from my doctorate degree in Physical Therapy, I also have a business degree (MBA) from a top US university.

      Hi Fran,
      As far as I’m aware there’s no Spanish language requirement for your degree homolgation or colegio registration. But do check the website of your local colegio to make sure – rules can change!

    I am in the process of trying to gain homolgation. The health authority has finally replied after 6 months with a response that I have to sit an aptitude test or internship. Do you have any advice or know a way around this?

      Hi Lizzie,
      I’m afraid I don’t know a way around this, I’d suggest speaking to a lawyer or gestor (perhaps the one you used for your work visa and NIE number?) and ensuring that your full physiotherapy course transcript has been legally translated as well as all of your subsequent post grad course details and your work history. Perhaps speak to the CSP in the UK as well, they may be more up to date on the current legislation and be able to support you in ensuring all your documentation is up to date.

    Hi Estelle,

    Does you have any experience of someone getting their UK MSc. physiotherapy (pre-reg) degree recognised in Spain?

    In short, for my undergraduate degree, I studied Nursing in Ireland then did an accelerated Masters (2 years) in the UK to become a physiotherapist. After that, I worked for two years in the public health system.

    I’m getting a bit worried that the Spanish authorities won’t recognise my degree since I’m asking for a Masters to be recognised like a BSc, rather than a straightforward recognition of a similar undergraduate degree.

    However, I have friends from the course whose degrees were recognised without problem in Ireland and Australia.

    I understand Brexit doesn’t affect this process as the UK remains part of the Bologna Accord.

    Any advice/information would be much appreciated.

    Does MBT work for arthritish in hands & is the equipment noisy like an MRI scanner?

      Yes, MBST/MRT has exceptional results for hands – some of the most interesting studies were on treating arthritis, both osteo and rheumatic in the hands.
      No, the machine is completely silent. It’s the “camera” part that makes the noise, the magnets themselves are silent. It’s so quiet they fitted the machine with small flashing blue and green lights so you could feel confident it was active and it beeps every 15 minutes, again to reassure both the patient and the technician that treatment is in progress
